Differences in the response to CME and CIR drivers of geomagnetic disturbances

Utilizing 1-minute resolution data on the geomagnetic indices SYM-H, AE, solar wind parameters (velocity Vsw and density Np), z-component Bz of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) during cycles 23 24, we have statistically analyzed correlations between activity (storms substorms), Vsw, Np, Bz, energy coupling functions Earth’s magnetosphere. For selected 131 CME-driven storms, SYM-H stronger depends B than other parameters, whereas 161 CIR-driven storms nearly same dependence electric field, rate open flux dφ/dt, reconnection Ekl. Thus, dayside are likely to different contributions for two types. During types, substorm intensity AE relies mainly IMF field.
